EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE OF LEPROSY IN BRAZIL BETWEEN 2014 and 2021

Objective: To analyze the epidemiological profile of leprosy in Brazil between 2014 and 2021. Methods: This is an ecological, horizontal, retrospective, quantitative study. The participants were those notified with a diagnosis of leprosy through the data processing system grouped by the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System and Notifiable Diseases Information System. Data were imported into electronic spreadsheets, where they were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: 204,739 new cases of the disease were registered, with an average annual detection rate of 11.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and a peak in 2014. The profile was: male individuals, aged 40 to 59 years, race brown, low education, diagnosed with the multibacillary form, from the Midwest region of Brazil. Conclusion: The incidence of leprosy has been decreasing over the years, but it has not yet been possible to reach the goal proposed by the World Health Organization.
