Abstract

Introduction: Congenital syphilis is an infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum transmitted through the hematogenous route to the fetuses. Objectives: To analyze the distribution of congenital syphilis cases in children under one year of age, calculate the incidence rate and evaluate its temporal behavior in Brazil and its regions from 2008 to 2018. Method: This is a descriptive ecological study, elaborated through data accessed from the Information System for Notifiable Diseases (SINAN) and the Notification System for Live Births (SINASC) in the database of the Information System of the Unified Health System (DATASUS). Results: From 2008 to 2017, the incidence rate of congenital syphilis in Brazil grew every year from 2017 to 2018 there was a drop of 6%. Conclusions: Based on the knowledge obtained from these epidemiological data on congenital syphilis, it is possible to identify priority regions for the surveillance service.
