Objective: the objective is to report the experience of nursing students in university extension in childcare activities. Method: the descriptive method was used, the study being an experience lived by nursing students within childcare consultations at the basic health unit, in a municipality located in the northwest region of Rio Grande do Sul. Results: With the activities developed during a year in the project we can reorganize childcare consultations in the health service, as well as organize the weekly schedule with scheduled times and follow-up. Conclusion: It is concluded that from the beginning for academics it was possible to speak in a professional manner, containing ethics, in addition to the knowledge acquired. For health services, offering qualified care and for users such as the child and the family, the benefits of humanized assistance and committed to information and health care.
