OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiological profile, indications, and postoperative complications of patients injuries subjected to splenectomy. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study, conducted by collecting data from medical records of patients undergoing splenectomy between 2015 and 2019 in a tertiary care hospital. RESULTS: The sample was composed of 57 patients, mean age 33.4 years (+-19.9), mostly children/adolescents (33.3%), male (57.9%), single (57.9%), Catholic (80.7%), workers of the tertiary sector (43,9%), who didn't finish fundamental school (42,1%), and people who are not from Passo Fundo (66,7%). The main indication for splenectomy was Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (33.3%) and the main associated postoperative alteration was persistent leukocytosis (25%). CONCLUSIONS: Splenectomy is more common in children/adolescents, male, and its main indication is the involvement of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura according to most of the studies and presents complications uncommonly and when present, they are related to persistent leukocytosis.
