Objectives: To verify the efficacy of psychobiotics, a type of probiotic, in the treatment of depression and anxiety, considering the connection between the nervous system and the intestinal microbiota. Methods: A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines, analyzing articles published in the last five years. Cohort studies and clinical trials that evaluated the use of probiotics in the treatment of these disorders were included. Results and Discussion: The analysis included 25 articles. The results indicated that 100% of individuals with depression and anxiety experienced improvements in anxiety symptoms. In addition, 60% of participants with only anxiety symptoms and 72.7% of those with only depressive symptoms also presented improvements. Most studies presented a low risk of bias, confirming the benefits of psychobiotics. Conclusion: The results of this study reinforce the efficacy of psychobiotics, with emphasis on the species Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus acidophilus, in the treatment of depression and anxiety, highlighting the important relationship between the gut-brain axis in the management of these disorders.
